Fast-paced, exciting, and so much fun are the best words I could find to describe my internship experience at Albuquerque The Magazine. Walking into the office on my first day, it was safe to say I was both nervous and excited. I had pictured a very serious, quiet office building where most of the only noise you would hear is the tapping of a keyboard. Instead, I was welcomed to an office full of creativity, energy, and a genuine love of what everyone in the office were all doing.
One of the best parts of this internship has been being able to explore Albuquerque in a way that I never have before. Through reading some of the older issues of magazines, and helping to make corrections for the “Bites” list, my knowledge of my hometown has expanded a great amount. Before this experience, I thought I knew Albuquerque the best I could, turns out that there is always something new to learn about this city! From hidden local restaurants to community events and inspiring local artists, there is always something happening here, with the Magazine being right in the middle of it all.
As an intern, no two days were the same in the office for me. One day I would be organizing the archives and helping edit content, and the next I would be setting up for a launch party event with the rest of the team. I was quick to learn that sometimes the work that goes on behind a magazine is controlled chaos – in the best way possible.
There’s something thrilling about being able to watch an issue of a magazine come together piece by piece. Suddenly, all the hard work the office puts in, like the interviews, edits, photos, writing, and early morning meetings start to make sense. I learned how much proper teamwork and good communication play into creating a publication. Editors, photographers, designers, advertisers, writers, every single person plays a role in bringing the magazine to life. Watching all of this truly gave me a sense of appreciation for how true hard work pays off in a beautiful way.
Beyond the professional experience, what I will remember the best are the little moments. Laughing during meetings, discovering amazing local spots, and learning how passionate people are about this city. Interning at Albuquerque The Magazine taught me more than journalism or publishing skills. It taught me to tell stories that matter, to learn to ask for help, and how important community-centered media is. Also, it taught me to never doubt the motivational power of free treats in the office. I would 100% do this all over again if I could. If you ever get the chance to intern somewhere that lets you explore your city, meet inspiring people, and grow creatively while having fun along the way, please take it. After all, you never know where a story could take you.
