I have years of memories from Albuquerque the Magazine. I remember bumbling around as a young child– watching television in empty offices, , running through carpeted halls, drawing pictures at my mother’s desk. Now, I have a desk of my own. I cannot express what a pleasure it has been to view Albuquerque the Magazine through growing eyes and to become a part of its world.
Throughout my time here, I have been consistently surprised by the kindness and generosity of Larryl, Gena, and all the employees. I’ve met so many interesting people at the Magazine and through its various projects; in just months, I’ve been lucky enough to conduct interviews with entrepreneurs, chefs, college professors, touring musicians, and biologists. Through all of this, of course, I’ve also come to develop a greater appreciation for my hometown and all the beautiful art and culture it holds. I’ve been allowed a remarkable amount of flexibility and autonomy in my work here, and it has allowed me to interview and write about topics that I find interesting, rather than ones that are assigned to me.
One of my favorite projects of the year was the Tapa I wrote about the ABQ BioPark’s baby hippo, Maisy. The interview was super fun, the article was engaging and interesting to write, and the pictures were adorable. Another perk of the internship I found unexpected is that every food-related interview ended with me taking something home (including, once, some extremely spicy chile).
Despite the amount of time I spent in this office as a kid, I was too young to appreciate the work that gets done behind it all. Now, over the last year, I’ve seen the work of photographers, of graphic designers, of writers and editors, and so much more. I’ve come from the young child tagging along with her mom to a full, grateful member of the Albuquerque the Magazine community. I have also been allowed a place to pursue my passion for writing, which I am aware is not a chance many seventeen-year-olds get. Though my internship is over for now, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.
